So it's that time of year when March Madness, the NCAA's 65-team college basketball tournament, happens. Lots of betting on this tournament takes place; this usually takes the form of filling out a bracket, and then entering a pool with one's friends where the person who has the "most correct" bracket is the winner. (I suspect most of my US readers are aware of this, but I have lots of non-US readers.) "Most correct" is usually judged by who named the winners of the most games correctly, with some sort of weighting that counts naming the correct winners of later games in the tournament more heavily."

Chapter I
1.) Gödel's Defense of Classical Mathematics.
It is well-known that many programs, devised in order to insure the clarity of mathematical concepts, as well as to secure the foundations of mathematics, have resorted to imposing restrictions on the methods of reasoning usually permitted in the formulation of mathematical statements and proofs. From the standpoint of consistency, it is hoped that the kinds of reasoning which lead to paradox can be disallowed. Hence mathematics would be saved from the fear of paradox by the security of its methods. From the standpoint of clarity, regulations were imposed which required that the concepts of mathematics adhere to stringent requirements of exactness and perspicuity, often formulated in terms of psychological criteria. Hence a theorem of mathematics would be completely understood, rather than merely accepted because no fault could be found with its proof. If by mathematics one understands the usual content of Algebra, Geometry, and Analysis, it

Fundamental Algorithms contains background information for the series. Chapter one provides mathematical preliminaries and basic programming concepts, along with an introduction to the MIX assembly language, used throughout for implementations. Chapter two covers simple information structures: lists, trees, and related data structures."

How shall we describe what happened this weekend with Bear Stearns? The first big casualty of the credit crisis, yes. Bailout, no.
Bear Stearns was an investment bank that made trades and created markets for a broad range of securities, including extensive use of derivative contracts such as credit default swaps. In a credit default swap, the seller agrees for a fee to absorb the losses if a certain asset specified by the buyer goes into default. As an up
